How to clean a mattress

We clean sheets, blankets, pillows, and whatever else you can cram into your washing machine on a regular basis. If there’s one thing that’s significantly overlooked, it’s your mattress. While washing the layers on top of your mattress are important, in most cases it simply isn’t enough! Learning how to clean a mattress isn’t the most invigorating chore, but actually doing it will ensure that your sleeping area stays healthy and fresh. Here are a few pointers to help you get started, and why it’s important to boot!

Why Clean Your Mattress?

Pillow fightDust mites, allergens, stains, dead skin – all this nastiness adds up over time and often feeds on each other to create an environment of unhealthiness. A dirty rest area has the power to negatively impact your sleep, which may lead to a myriad of other health issues.  Humans spend approximately a third of their lives sleeping, and unfortunately much of that may be on a “well loved” mattress. Sheets are an obvious candidate, but think of how often you clean your kitchen, living room, and bathroom – how well does surface cleaning actually work there? With this in mind, let’s learn how to clean a mattress!

How to Clean a Mattress

Now that you’re finally dedicated to getting your mattress cleaned properly, here are four basic steps you can take to get started:

  1. Clean That Bedding -- Even though we said above that cleaning your sheets, blankets, and pillows isn’t enough, it’s still the mandatory first step. For these, it’s best to use hot water and a good, hopefully environmentally friendly laundry detergent.
  2. Break out the vacuum cleaner -- With your bedding in the wash, your mattress is now bare. Use a trusty vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment and go to town on that sucker. Make sure to cover all sides of your mattress and into any crevices, because a lot of icky stuff can makes its home there.
  3. Address those Stains -- After a nice, deep vacuum clean, it’s best to look for those obvious, prominent stains. Stains happen – we won’t ask why or how. But mattresses are just prone to getting them from a variety of sources so addressing the stains and using proper cleaning methods is of utmost importance!
  4. Top it off – Make one final go-around with the vacuum cleaner and add a mattress protector (these will absorb or prevent stains) and you’re good to go!
